DISTRICT ATTORNEY HARRIS ANNOUNCES GUN CHARGES IN “PINK SATURDAY” SHOOTINGS
SAN FRANCISCO – District Attorney Kamala D. Harris announced today the filing of felony gun charges against Ed Perkins. Perkins, age 20 of San Francisco, was charged with one count of possessing a concealed weapon and one count of possessing a loaded weapon late in the afternoon on Tuesday, June 29, 2010.
The charges stem from a San Francisco Police Department investigation into the shooting death of 19-year-old Stephen Powell and two other individuals on Saturday, June 26, 2010 in the Castro during the annual “Pink Saturday” Pride celebration. Shortly after the incident, Perkins was found by police to be in possession of a .357 caliber revolver and arrested for his suspected involvement in the shootings that killed Stephen Powell and wounded two others.
Follow-up police investigation revealed that all seven of the shots fired were not fired from the weapon Perkins is charged with being in possession of, and no witnesses currently identified could place the defendant at the scene. The police investigation into the shootings continues.
“The San Francisco Police Department is working to apprehend the individual who marred one of our most proud celebrations by bringing deadly mayhem to our streets,” said San Francisco District Attorney Kamala D. Harris. “While the investigation into the fatal shooting continues, this defendant will face charges for illegally being in possession of a deadly weapon because there must be zero tolerance for illegal guns in our community.”
Perkins will be arraigned on the state gun charges in San Francisco Superior Court at the Hall of Justice on Wednesday, June 30, 2010 at 9AM.
