San Francisco - District Attorney George Gascón announced today that Scott Holland “aka Gary Scott Holland” (DOB 6/29/67) pled guilty to the first degree murder of Kathleen “Kate” Horan, a 46-year-old resident of San Francisco’s Russian Hill neighborhood.“Last year, our city became outraged at the brutal and senseless murder of Ms. Horan,” said District Attorney George Gascón. “The defendant violated the sanctity of the victim’s home and murdered her. I can only hope today’s guilty plea allows family members to begin the healing process.”
On October 29, 2010 Holland entered the victim’s apartment located on the 900 block of Chestnut Street. He posed as a PG&E utility worker to gain access to the victim’s home. San Francisco Police officers responded to Horan’s residence to check on her well-being. Upon entry, officers discovered her body inside her apartment. Due to the Police Department’s thorough and efficient work preserving the crime scene, DNA evidence found at the scene helped law enforcement link Holland to the crime.
Defendant Holland was arrested on November 5, 2010 and is currently being held in San Francisco County Jail. The defendant was arraigned on November 9, 2010 in San Francisco Superior Court on one count of murder in violation of Penal Code Section 187, two counts of residential burglary in violation of Penal Code Section 459, one count of attempted rape in violation of Penal Code Section 664/261 and one count of robbery in violation of Penal Code Section 211. At the time of the murder, Holland was on parole for attempting to murder his Aunt which occurred in Fresno in 1999. For that crime, he was sentenced to 13 years in state prison.
As part of Holland’s plea for first degree murder, he agreed to waive his right to future state and federal appeals. He is facing 50 years to life and is scheduled to be sentenced on December 12, 1:30pm in Department 23.
“The impact of Kate's murder in the neighborhood is still being felt in many ways. We were shocked by the randomness & brutality of the crime. Kate was a good neighbor & friend to many. We hope this brings some closure for the Horan family,” said Deborah Garofalo, Safety Chairperson for the Russian Hill Neighbors and Committee for Kate Horan.
“Thanks to the excellent work of the San Francisco police officers, prosecutors, and the Russian Hill Neighbors, our city can feel safer knowing that a convicted murderer is off our streets,” said District Attorney George Gascón. “We encourage community members, especially women, to take precautions. You don’t have to let someone in your home. Ask for identification if your instincts tell you something isn’t right or call the police.”
The arrest of defendant Holland is the result of the investigation of San Francisco Police Department Inspector Michael Dudoroff, Inspector Daniel Dedet and Inspector Robert Velarde. Jean Hassett is the Victim Witness Advocate from the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office assigned to this case. Assistant District Attorney Michael Swart is the prosecutor.
