Murder conviction reinstated in S.F. dog mauling

(08-22) 16:57 PDT SAN FRANCISCO-- A judge reinstated a San Francisco attorney's murder conviction Friday for her dog's fatal mauling of her neighbor in an apartment building hallway in 2001 and ordered her jailed immediately while she awaits a prison sentence of 15 years to life. Marjorie Knoller, 53, sat quietly in the courtroom while Superior Court Judge Charlotte Woolard discounted her testimony at her 2002 trial and said Knoller had known her dog was potentially lethal when she took the animal out of her apartment without a muzzle. Bill would aid young violent-crime witnesses

California children who witness violent crime - the killing of a neighbor or assault of a friend - would be eligible for up to $5,000 in mental health services under a bill awaiting the governor's signature. The bill would close a loophole in current law, which currently offers state victims assistance funding only for those directly affected by violence or those living with or related to the victims, said the measure's author, Assemblyman Mark Leno, D-San Francisco.
