STATEMENT FROM SAN FRANCISCO DISTRICT ATTORNEY GEORGE GASCÓN
On the Appellate Decision in the Domestic Violence Murder of Claire Joyce Tempongko

“On March 30, 2011 the First District Court of Appeal ruled 2-1 to overturn the second-degree murder conviction of Tari Ramirez for the stabbing death of his former girlfriend Claire Joyce Tempongko.

The San Francisco District Attorney’s Office, advocates and the victim’s family worked diligently to secure this conviction. As District Attorney, I am dedicated to actively working with the California Attorney General’s Office, which handles these appeals, to overturn this decision and reinstate the jury conviction in this ground-breaking case. If we cannot get the conviction reinstated through the appellate process, we are prepared and will retry this case.

Claire Joyce Tempongko’s death was a tragedy that changed her family for life and gripped our City. From this horrible set of circumstances, San Francisco has emerged stronger. Working with advocates and individuals committed to the fight against domestic violence, we have put in place the protocols and procedures needed to keep others from suffering in the same way that Claire Joyce Tempongko and her family have.

We are committed to bringing justice to the family of Claire Joyce Tempongko. We thank the community for working with us to support the family as this case continues.”
