SAN FRANCISCO – District Attorney George Gascón announced that he has appointed Cristine Soto DeBerry as his chief of staff. DeBerry currently serves as deputy chief of staff to Mayor Ed Lee, a role she also served for Mayor Gavin Newsom. She is also a former deputy public defender.

“I am very pleased that Cristine is joining my administration,” said District Attorney Gascón. “She has the perfect blend of skills to help run this office. As a top aide in the Lee and Newsom administrations, and as a former deputy public defender, she is an expert at navigating both City Hall and the criminal justice system.”

As Gascón’s Chief of Staff, DeBerry will be responsible for a broad scope of duties including executive coordination, policy and legislative development, government relations, communications, public affairs and special projects.

“Cristine has been invaluable to the Mayor’s Office and has proven her commitment to the service to our City,” said Mayor Edwin M. Lee. “We look forward to working closely and collaboratively with her in her new capacity in the District Attorney’s Office to protect the safety of the people of San Francisco.”

During the Newsom Administration, DeBerry was relied upon as his chief criminal justice advisor. Mayor Lee said that DeBerry played a central role in several key areas, including crafting important criminal justice policy initiatives such as the Community Justice Center (CJC) and an ongoing effort to reform the citation system in San Francisco. Previously she served as Newsom’s liaison to the Board of Supervisors.

Prior to joining the Newsom administration in 2007, DeBerry spent five years as a deputy public defender in Los Angeles and worked on statewide ballot measures and policy issues for the Center for Responsible Lending and Preschool California.

DeBerry earned a law degree from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law (Boalt Hall) and a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of California, Los Angeles. She is married to Stephen DeBerry. They have two daughters.
