SAN FRANCISCO – Today, District Attorney George Gascón announced that Chad Brian Litz, age 39, has been arrested and charged for practicing medicine without a license and identity theft, following an investigation which revealed that Litz volunteered as a Nurse Practitioner at a local medical clinic for four months.  Litz has no apparent medical training or experience.  The Department of Consumer Affairs was notified after clinic volunteers discovered Litz’s deception.

“We trust our medical professionals with our health and well-being,” said District Attorney George Gascón. “Those illegally practicing medicine can cause serious harm and undermine the trust patients put in these professionals.”

According to court records, Litz obtained a volunteer position with the City Impact Clinic by providing a forged certificate from the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners as well as other fraudulent materials. During his time at the clinic Litz posed as a Nurse Practitioner which allowed him to treat patients with little supervision, including prescribing privileges that enabled him to dispense controlled substances to patients.  Litz treated at least 28 different patients, including two for whom he prescribed controlled substances. Court documents allege that Litz has never been licensed to practice as a nurse or doctor.

Litz has been arrested on a warrant alleging four felony counts for practicing medicine without a license and one felony count for identity theft.  Litz was arrested disembarking from a cruise ship in Tampa, Florida on March 10th.

Litz was arraigned in Department 9 of the Superior Court today and entered a not guilty plea.  Litz remains in-custody with bail set at $65,000. His preliminary hearing has been set for April 11th in Department 20 at 9 AM.

If anyone was treated by Chad Brian Litz at the City Impact Clinic, located at 232 Jones Street, San Francisco, please contact investigator Andrea Todd at the Department of Consumer Affairs(510) 888-7072.

This case was developed through an investigation conducted by investigators from the California Department of Consumer Affairs, Division of Investigation.  Assistant District Attorney Phoebe Maffei is the prosecutor assigned to the case.
