Rideshare With Care
In 2018, our office launched its Rideshare With Care citywide public education campaign to enhance public safety for rideshare passengers. According to a report by the San Francisco Transportation Authority, over 170,000 rideshare trips are taken on a typical workday in San Francisco. While most are completed safely, there have been recent incidents around the country—including in San Francisco—where unsuspecting passengers have been attacked by individuals pretending to be rideshare drivers. These schemes are deliberate and take advantage of the trust passengers place in the services they rely on.
The Rideshare With Care public education campaign promotes a simple step-by-step approach for passengers to maximize their safety while using rideshare services. These steps include:
1. VERIFY the license plate number, color, make, and model of the car.
2. CONFRIM your driver's name before you provide your own name. Make sure the driver matches the picture on your rideshare App.
3. SHARE your location and destination with a friend, family member, or someone you trust.
If a crime occurs during your rideshare, call 911 immediately. You should also report the driver to the rideshare company and contact your local police station.
