WOMAN CHARGED FOR DEFRAUDING THE CITY AND COUNTY OF SAN FRANCISCO
SAN FRANCISCO — Today, District Attorney George Gascón announced that Marta Betancur, age 64, of Antioch, has been charged in San Francisco Superior Court with six felonies relating to Insurance Fraud and Attempted Perjury.
"Insurance fraud is a multi-billion dollar crime that has real costs to consumers," said San Francisco District Attorney George Gascón. “Fraud drives up insurance premiums for the rest of us.”
According to court documents, Betancur reported an on-the-job injury to her employer, the City College of San Francisco, in September 2015 and received medical treatment and disability benefits up until her retirement in January 2017. Betancur, who visited doctors and specialists almost monthly, claimed incapacity and extreme pain unremedied by medication, treatment, and functional restoration programs. However, surveillance video captured Betancur performing many of the tasks she previously reported being incapable of performing. Betancur’s fraudulent misrepresentations resulted in a loss to the City and County of San Francisco of over $70,000.00.
Betancur surrendered to authorities on August 8, 2019 and was arraigned Wednesday in Department 11 where she entered a plea of not guilty. The case was developed through an investigation conducted by San Francisco District Attorney Investigator Michael Morse of the District Attorney’s Investigations Bureau. Assistant District Attorney Stephanie M. Zudekoff is the prosecutor assigned to the case.
