MAN CONVICTED OF BURGLARY IN GROUP SMASH-AND- GRAB AT MARKET STREET WALGREENS

San Francisco, CA – Today, San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced that her office secured a conviction of Daron Wilson (23) of San Francisco, after a trial by jury. Mr. Wilson was convicted of burglary during a state of emergency (PC 463(a)), second-degree burglary (PC 459) and resisting an officer (PC 148(a)(1)). Mr. Wilson burglarized a Walgreens located on the 1300 block of Market Street on November 19, 2021.

“The era of consequence-free smash-and-grabs and brazen retail theft is over,” said District Attorney Brooke Jenkins. “This jury’s verdict sends a loud and clear message that this behavior will not be tolerated and that those who seek to engage in this conduct will be held accountable and face consequences. My office takes these cases seriously and will prosecute them accordingly.”

At approximately 11:48 p.m. on November 19. 2021, San Francisco Police officers were flagged down by security guards regarding a burglary in progress. The entire front window and glass on multiple entry and exit doors at the Walgreens were all broken out. When officers arrived, they found cash registers and prescriptions on the floor and the place in disarray. Mr. Wilson was behind the front counter. Officers announced themselves, ordered the defendant to stop, and put his hands up. Ignoring their commands, he jumped up onto a back counter, and then jumped out through the broken front window. He ran several blocks on foot before being taken into custody by assisting SFPD officers at 10th and Jessie Street.

The case against Mr. Wilson was successfully prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Josiah Bournes with support and assistance from the paralegal team, the IT team, and District Attorney Inspectors who assisted throughout the trial process. This case was investigated by the San Francisco Police Department’s Burglary Unit.

“I would like to thank the jury for their careful consideration of the facts and the law in this case,” said Assistant District Attorney Josiah Bournes. “I would also like to thank Walgreen’s and Allied Security for their cooperation in investigating and prosecuting this case.”

Mr. Wilson is currently out of custody pending sentencing. He faces up to three years and eight months in State Prison. Sentencing is scheduled for November 30, 2023.
