San Francisco, CA – Today, San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced that Jose Dejesus Rodriguez (25), was convicted after a trial by jury for of killing his girlfriend in the Outer Sunset in 2019. Mr. Rodriguez was convicted of voluntary manslaughter (PC 192(a)) and resisting an officer with removal or attempted removal of a weapon (PC 148(d)). The jury also found true the allegation that Mr. Rodriguez personally and intentionally used a firearm in the commission of the killing.
“I would like to express my condolences to the victim’s friends and family,” said District Attorney Brooke Jenkins. “I hope that this verdict offers them some comfort and aids in their healing process. My office will always stand with victims and survivors of crime and do everything we can to ensure that justice is done.”
According to court records, October 24, 2019, at around 2:07 p.m., Mr. Rodriguez fatally shot his ex-girlfriend, a 21-year-old San Francisco State University student, at her residence in the Outer Sunset District. Responding officers found Mr. Rodriguez at the scene with the murder weapon located nearby. Mr. Rodriguez made the initial 9-1-1 call but refused to provide any details about the shooting. He denied knowing about the gun and refused to cooperate with law enforcement. Mr. Rodriguez had been previously violent, controlling and jealous toward the victim, as detailed in her journal and supported by testimony from her friends and roommate.
The case against Mr. Rodriguez was successfully prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Leigh Frazier, with support and assistance from paralegals Julio Flores Guzman and Jessica Diamond. Victim Witness Advocate Maria Reynoso worked closely with the victim’s family throughout the pendency of this case. Prosecutors were able to develop a strong case against Mr. Rodriguez based on the San Francisco Police Department’s thorough investigation as well as the assistance and expert testimony and analysis from the SFPD Crime Laboratory, the Silicon Valley Regional Forensics Laboratory and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
“The defendant’s callous act of violence extinguished the young life of a kind, smart and beautiful woman,” said Assistant District Attorney Leigh Frazier. “The killing of Valeria Villagomez is a tragic reminder of the urgent need to address domestic violence. Such acts of violence have no place in our community and must be confronted head-on. No one should have to live in fear of their partner. My heartfelt condolences go out to Valeria’s family, friends and all who knew and loved her.”
Mr. Rodriguez has been in custody since his arrest on October 24, 2019. Sentencing will be scheduled on October 9, 2024.
