San Francisco, CA – Today, San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced that Jing Zhuang Li (39), was charged in connection with an attack on two women in a Chinatown SRO. Mr. Li is scheduled to be arraigned on January 6, 2025, in Department 10 of the Hall of Justice at 9:00 AM. He is charged with two counts of attempted murder (PC 66/4187(a)), with allegations that he personally and intentionally inflicted great bodily injury on the victims and that he was armed with a deadly weapon. He is also charged with one count of mayhem (PC 203), two counts of elder abuse (PC 368(b)(1)), two counts of assault with a deadly weapon (PC 245(a)(1)), two counts of battery causing great bodily injury (PC 243) and one count of first-degree burglary (PC 459). The District Attorney’s Office moved to have him detained pending trial due to the public safety risk he poses.
“There is no place for violence in our city,” said District Attorney Brooke Jenkins. “I wish the victims a speedy recovery. My office will now do everything in our power to fight for justice in the courtroom for the victims and all of those impacted by this attack.”
According to court records, on December 26, 2024, Mr. Li allegedly attacked an 87-year-old neighbor in the apartment building he lived in, located on the 600 block of Broadway, with a 17-inch-long metal wrench several times. The victim fell to the ground after the first strike. Another tenant in the building, a 69-year-old-woman, who saw the incident and yelled at him to stop, was allegedly also attacked by Mr. Li and struck in the head with the wrench. Both victims suffered significant injuries. The 87-year-old victim had major bleeding and a fractured skull. The second victim had a left wrist fracture, three rib fractures, a skull fracture, a concussion, three scalp lacerations that required extensive suturing, and a torn ear.
