District Attorney Brooke Jenkins Announces Felony Charges After Violent Attack of Western Addition Community Leader

The assailant has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon and causing great bodily harm to the victim

San Francisco, CA — Today San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced that the District Attorney’s Office filed felony charges yesterday against an assailant who violently attacked a community leader in the Western Addition on Friday, July 15, 2022. The 24-year-old man has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon and with causing great bodily harm to the victim.

“Under my watch, utterly vicious attacks like this one will never be tolerated in San Francisco. Violent offenders will be held accountable for their actions,” said District Attorney Brooke Jenkins. “These charges send a message that the safety of every community in San Francisco is a top priority for my office, and there will be appropriate consequences for anyone who engages in violence.”

James Spingola, the executive director of the Ella Hill Hutch Community Center and a Commissioner on the City and County of San Francisco’s Juvenile Probation Department Commission, was attacked by two men at 11:00 a.m. on July 15 outside of the community center. The altercation started after Mr. Spingola approached the assailants on the steps of the center’s property and calmly asked them to move. The men then viciously attacked Mr. Spingola with a wooden 2 x 4 plank.

“This represents a new day and a new attitude in San Francisco when it comes to dealing with the epidemic of violence that is affecting our neighborhoods, especially our Black community in the Fillmore,” said Rev. Amos C. Brown, pastor of the Third Baptist Church and President of the San Francisco Chapter of the NAACP. “It’s a credit to the new District Attorney to see her taking this commonsense approach so soon in her tenure.”

The second suspected assailant has not yet been found. Anyone with information about the attack is asked to call the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) Tip Line at: 1-415-575-4444 or Text a Tip to TIP411 and begin the text message with SFPD. You may remain anonymous.
