JURY CONVICTS MAN OF GROSS VEHICULAR MANSLAUGHTER FOLLOWING HIGH SPEED COLLISION THAT RESULTED IN DEATH

San Francisco, CA – San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced today that her office secured a conviction of Valentino Miles (31) after trial by jury for vehicular manslaughter following a 2019 high speed collision in the Bayview. Mr. Miles was convicted of one count of gross vehicular manslaughter (PC 192(c)(1)).

“I would like to thank the jury for their service in this trial,” said District Attorney Brooke Jenkins. “This tragedy was 100% preventable. Six years after this incident, we have made some progress and are better positioned to make our roads safer yet we still see far too much speeding and dangerous behavior on our roads. I hope this verdict brings the victim’s family some closure and a sense of healing and sends a message to all that my office takes these cases seriously and will seek justice for as long as it takes.”

According to testimony and evidence presented at trial, on October 6, 2019, Mr. Miles accelerated his car, a rented Chevy Corvette Z06, to at least 140 miles per hour (mph) while driving down Evans Avenue toward Hunter’s Point Boulevard, a posted 35 mph zone. He took a sharp right-hand turn, still traveling at approximately 90 miles per hour. Mr. Miles was unable to maintain his lane and drove over the double yellow line into oncoming traffic, causing a head-on collision with the victim’s car while travelling at approximately 76 mph. The collision caused the victim’s car to be pushed back approximately 90 feet and ultimately resulted in the victim’s death.

The case against Mr. Miles was successfully prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Angela Roze, with assistance from District Attorney Investigator Scott Wong, and paralegal Sara Wong. Victim Advocates Ariel Edwards and Nori Kitaoka worked closely with the victim’s family throughout the trial. Prosecutors were able to develop a strong case based on the SFPD’s Traffic Crash Investigation Unit, Traffic Company and Bayview Station’s thorough investigation.

“I am very grateful to the jury for their careful consideration of the evidence and law in this case,” said Assistant District Attorney Angela Roze. “The victim was leaving a dog park to meet his family for a Sunday afternoon picnic when his life was needlessly taken by Mr. Miles’ egregious and reckless actions – turning Evans Avenue into his own personal racetrack. I hope this conviction is able to bring some sense of closure and healing to the victim’s family who have waited 6 long years for justice.”
Mr. Miles is currently out of custody. Sentencing is scheduled for August 7, 2025.
