San Francisco, CA – Today, San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced that Jonathan Contreras (33), was charged in connection to a shooting in the Tenderloin. He was arraigned on June 5, 2025, and pleaded not guilty to all charges and denied all allegations. His first court appearance was on June 2, 2025.
Mr. Contreras is charged with discharging a firearm from a motor vehicle (PC 26100(c)), with an allegation that he personally and intentionally used a firearm causing great bodily injury (PC 12022.53(d). He is also charged with one count of assault with a firearm (PC 245(a)(2)), with an allegation that he personally used a firearm and that he personally inflicted great bodily injury on the victim, and one count of discharge of a firearm at an inhabited space (PC 246). He is also charged with one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm (PC 29800(a)(1)), unlawful possession of a loaded firearm (PC 25850(a), having a concealed firearm in a vehicle (PC 25400(a)(1)), and unlawful possession of ammunition (PC 30305(a)(1)).
According to court documents, on May 24, 2025, Mr. Contreras allegedly shot himself and a man on the 500 block of Ellis Street. Allegedly, he was in a vehicle and asked the victim, who had just exited from a business on the block, if he was a member of a gang. Mr. Contreras allegedly then pulled out a firearm, accidentally shot himself in the leg and then shot the victim causing great bodily injury.
Mr. Contreras is currently in custody. The District Attorney’s Office moved to have him detained pending trial due to the public safety risk he poses. The court set no bail without prejudice.
