MAN CONVICTED OF ASSAULT IN UNPROVOKED TENDERLOIN ATTACK

San Francisco, CA -San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced today that her office secured a conviction of Samuel Cox (46), after a trial by jury for an unprovoked assault in the Tenderloin last summer. Mr. Cox was convicted of assault with force likely to cause great bodily injury (PC 245(a)(4)) with an allegation that he personally inflicted great bodily injury (PC 12022.7) on the victim found true.

“I would like to thank the jury for their service in this trial,” said District Attorney Brooke Jenkins. “The jury’s verdict delivers justice to the victim in this case who was viciously assaulted in an unprovoked attack. I hope that this verdict brings the victim some closure as he heals from this assault.”

According to the testimony and evidence presented at trial, on August 24, 2024, at around 11:15PM, the victim was standing on a sidewalk near the intersection of Leavenworth and Ellis Streets when Mr. Cox approached him from behind and struck him in the head with a closed right fist without provocation. The victim fell to the ground from the blow and struck his head on the concrete sidewalk. Several witnesses called 911 and San Francisco Police arrived and summoned medics. The victim was transported to San Francisco General Hospital where he was later diagnosed with serious and significant injuries. Mr. Cox was arrested on September 4, 2024, on Cyril Magnin Street.

The case against Mr. Cox was successfully prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Robert Miranda with assistance from District Attorney Investigator Sammy Kim, paralegals Jennifer Java and Rayna Bryan. Victim Advocate Lauren Lopez worked closely with the victims through the pendency of this case. Prosecutors were able to develop a strong case against Mr. Cox based on the work of San Francisco Police patrol officers from both Southern and Tenderloin Stations who responded to the respective scenes.

“Violent crime has no place in any of our communities in San Francisco.” said Assistant District Attorney Robert Miranda. “I thank the jury for their service and thoughtful deliberation.”

Mr. Cox is currently in custody. Sentencing will be scheduled after a bench trial on aggravating factors on April 7, 2025.
