MAN CONVICTED OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND ASSAULT

San Francisco, CA

San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced today that her office secured a conviction of Jose Guadalupe Cano Flores (24), after a trial by jury for attacking a woman in a residence. Mr. Cano Flores was convicted of domestic violence (PC 273.5(a)), and two counts of assault with force likely to cause great bodily injury (PC 245(a)(4)).

“The survivor’s courage in coming forward and demanding justice for these terrible crimes should be an inspiration to all who think they are alone,” said District Attorney Brooke Jenkins. “You are not alone, help is available, and you have my commitment to prosecute these cases vigorously and do everything we can in our power to fight for justice with survivors in the courtroom.”

According to the testimony and evidence presented at trial, on April 5, 2025, Mr. Cano Flores attacked the victim, after she received a phone call. He punched her multiple times and broke her nose. On April 28, 2025, Mr. Cano Flores once again attacked the victim, after she received a phone call. He strangled her and threw her to the floor, hitting her head on a bench, causing her to lose consciousness. When she regained consciousness, she tried multiple times to flee, but Mr. Cano Flores physically restrained her and dragged her back. The victim was eventually able to get help from the front-desk staff who called police. Police Officers located Mr. Cano Flores hiding in a closet in the residence.

The case against Mr. Cano Flores was successfully prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Megan Wang with assistance from paralegals Lena Ku and Loretta Luu and IT support from Leland Chan and Noaeh Pinaire. Victim Advocate Cody Martinez worked closely with the victim through the pendency of this case. Prosecutors were able to develop a strong case against Mr. Cano Flores based on the work of SFPD patrol officers from Mission Station who responded to the scene and officers from the Special Victim’s Unit who continued the investigation.

“I want to thank the victim for her bravery in telling her story, the witnesses for intervening in a dangerous situation, and the jury for their careful evaluation of the evidence,” said Assistant District Attorney Megan Wang. “This verdict sends a clear message that domestic violence will not be tolerated in San Francisco.”

Mr. Cano Flores is currently in custody. Sentencing is scheduled for October 1, 2025.
