MAN CONVICTED OF SEXUALLY ASSAULTING TWO WOMEN

San Francisco, CA – San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced today that her office secured convictions of Sergio Barillas Perez (32), after a trial by jury of sexually assaulting two women in two separate incidents in December of 2021 and February 2022. Mr. Barillas Perez was convicted of rape by force (PC 261(a)(2)), assault with force likely to cause great bodily injury (PC 245(a)(4)), and false imprisonment (PC 236) of the first victim, and attempted rape by force (PC 664/261(a)(2)), assault with force likely to cause great bodily injury (PC 245(a)(4)), criminal threats (PC 422), and assault with intent to commit rape (PC 220(a)), along with personal infliction of great bodily injury allegations (PC 12022.8, 12022.7(a)) as to the second victim.

“I would like to thank the jury for their service on this trial and the survivors for their courage and resilience,” said District Attorney Brooke Jenkins. “Every day we walk into courtrooms at the Hall of Justice to ensure that there is justice for victims of sexual violence and brutality. The jury’s verdict should also make clear that San Franciscans will hold sexual offenders accountable, and they will indeed face consequences.”

According to testimony and other evidence presented at trial, on December 11, 2021, Mr. Barillas Perez lured a woman into his garage in the Excelsior District where he strangled and raped her. Then, on February 2, 2022, after Mr. Barillas Perez followed a woman out of a bar in the Inner Sunset, he strangled her to unconsciousness and attempted to rape her.

The case was successfully prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Katherine Wells, with assistance from District Attorney Investigators Shan Johnson, Lissette Souza and Omega Crum, and Paralegal Andrew Ong. Victim Advocates Abigail Cordova and Gabriella Bayol worked closely with the survivors throughout this case. Prosecutors were able to develop a strong case against Mr. Barillas Perez because of the outstanding investigation of the San Francisco Police Department’s Special Victims Unit.

“I stand in awe of the two survivors who courageously shared their terrifying and painful stories,” said Assistant District Attorney Katherine Wells. “They have not only delivered justice to this predatory sexual offender, but helped ensure the safety of other women in our community. I thank the jury for their careful consideration of the evidence and for validating the survivors’ experiences.”

Mr. Barillas Perez is currently in custody pending sentencing. A sentencing date will be scheduled after the next court date of January 16, 2025.
