San Francisco, CA – Today, San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced that Kenny Man Wong, 56, of Los Angeles, was charged for defrauding parishioners at a church in the Sunset District of over $400,000. Mr. Wong is charged with four counts of grand theft. He is scheduled to be arraigned on September 9, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. in Department 19 at the Hall of Justice.
According to court records, starting in 2018, Mr. Wong served as a visiting pastor at a church on 19th Avenue in the Sunset District where he was known as “Dr. Wong.” Allegedly, he used his position of trust to learn about the parishioners’ personal, sometimes legal, struggles. At that point, he began allegedly offering legal services to his parishioners, claiming that in addition to being a pastor, he was also an attorney affiliated with several prestigious universities. Over the course of years, he is alleged to have extracted money from those who trusted him most, assuring them he was “working on their case.” Mr. Wong has never been licensed to practice law in California and never rendered any of the promised legal services. Instead, he allegedly used victim funds to purchase a home in Southern California. When victims confronted him, he allegedly continued to reassure them, citing to their shared faith. The total loss in these cases is over $400,000.
