San Francisco, CA – San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced today that her office secured a conviction of Mark Hughes (56) of Campbell California, after trial by jury for assaulting a man with a metal pole at the intersection of Union Street and Buchanan Street. Mr. Hughes was convicted of one felony count of assault with a deadly weapon (PC 245(a)(1)).
“Mr. Hughes’ violent, unprovoked attack is unacceptable and can not be allowed to become normalized,” said District Attorney Brooke Jenkins. “I am grateful to the jury for holding him accountable and ensuring that there will be consequences for this violent incident.”
On May 7, 2023, at approximately 9:00AM, Mr. Hughes, assaulted the victim at the intersection of a Union Street and Buchanan Street. The victim, travelling westbound on Union Street in a motorcycle saw Mr. Hughes, in the intersection, and attempted to ride around and avoid him. As the victim tried to ride past, Mr. Hughes swung the metal pole like a baseball bat and struck the victim in the back. The victim and other witnesses then called 911. Police arrived promptly and arrested him with the pole in his possession.
The case against Mr. Hughes was successfully prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Asit Panwala with assistance from victim advocate Shychai Douangsawang and interns Rosavida Viri-Cruz and Nick Aldrich. Prosecutors were able to develop a strong case against Mr. Hughes because of the immediate response of members of the San Francisco Police Department’s Northern Station.
“I would like to thank the jury for their sacrifice and thoughtful deliberation,” said Assistant District Attorney Asit Panwala. “This verdict holds Mr. Hughes accountable for his actions. I am grateful to the witnesses who stopped and called 911 to summon police who responded promptly and made an arrest at the scene.”
