San Francisco, CA – District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced today that her office secured a conviction of Melchor Manriquechan (34) of San Francisco, after a trial by jury. Mr. Manriquechan was convicted of assault (PC 240).  Melchor Manriquechan assaulted his ex-girlfriend in a domestic violence incident in her home on August 28, 2022.

“I would like to thank the survivor for her courage in testifying against her abuser in court,” said District Attorney Brooke Jenkins.  “I am glad that her swift action allowed law enforcement to intervene before a further escalation of violence.  This verdict sends a message to others that they need not suffer alone behind closed doors.  You are not alone.  My office will always do everything in our power to ensure that everyone understands that any form of domestic violence will not be tolerated.”

The victim had been sitting on the floor of her apartment with Mr. Manriquechan, who had been lying on the bed. Mr. Manriquechan became upset when the victim received a text message and told her that she was receiving text messages from other men.  He then violently grabbed her by the hair and pulled her toward him. She broke free and ran toward a hallway bathroom. He followed her and grabbed her by the left arm. She was able to break free again, open the bathroom door, and lock herself inside where she was able to call 911. 

While speaking with dispatch, the victim heard Mr. Manriquechan open the front door and leave the apartment. Thinking she was safe, she ran back to her bedroom and again locked herself inside. Mr. Manriquechan returned and attempted to gain entry to the bedroom. Finding the bedroom door locked, Defendant went to the kitchen, retrieved a knife, and used the knife to unlock the bedroom door from the outside. He told the victim that he wanted to retrieve his backpack. Once he did so, he left the apartment again.  He was subsequently arrested by San Francisco Police Tenderloin station officers in the same apartment building who reported to the scene.

The case against Mr.  Manriquechan was successfully prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Paul Samra with assistance from District Attorney Investigators Rosanna Figueroa and Tim Louie. Victim Advocate Diana Gonzalez worked closely with the victim and accompanied her during her two days of testimony at trial.  Prosecutors were able to develop a strong case against Mr. Manriquechan based on the careful investigative work of SFPD’s Tenderloin Station.

“I would like to thank the jurors for carefully assessing the evidence and delivering justice for the victim,” said Assistant District Attorney Paul Samra. “The jury’s verdict illustrates that victims of domestic violence matter to the People of San Francisco.”

Mr. Manriquechan is currently out of custody pending sentencing.  He faces up to six months in County Jail.  Sentencing is scheduled for November 20, 2023.
