San Francisco, CA –  Today, San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced that Robert Gray (35), of San Francisco, has been charged with felony vandalism (PC 594(b)(1)) with a special allegation that this was a hate crime (PC 422.75(a)), for using his skateboard to break several windows at the Masjid Al-Tawheed mosque located in Nob Hill.  

“Vandalism of this nature is completely unacceptable and is even more alarming as it occurred during the holy month of Ramadan and while Muslim families were present praying and worshipping,” said District Attorney Brooke Jenkins. “Our houses of worship are sacred spaces and targeting them in any way will not be tolerated in San Francisco. My office will make it clear that there is zero tolerance for those who commit any crimes targeting our religious spaces.” 

On April 10, 2024 at approximately 7:55 p.m., San Francisco Police Officers from Northern Station responded to a place of worship located on the 1200 block of Sutter Street regarding a vandalism suspect. Officers were advised that the suspect who vandalized the building on April 4, 2024 was currently on the property. When officers arrived on scene, they contacted the suspect that matched the description provided and detained him without incident. The information gathered during the course of the investigation indicates that this was a hate crime. 

Mr. Gray is currently in custody. Prosecutors are seeking pre-trial detention in this case because of the public safety risk he poses. Mr. Gray is scheduled to be arraigned on April 12, 2024 in Department 10 of the Hall of Justice. He faces six years in state prison if convicted of all charges and the hate crime allegation is found to be true.
