MAN CONVICTED OF MAKING CRIMINAL THREATS IN MISSION BAY APARTMENT COMPLEX

San Francisco, CA – San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced today that her office secured a conviction of Michael Dunn (60), after a trial by jury for threatening an employee at a residential complex in Mission Bay. Mr. Dunn was convicted of criminal threats (PC 422).

“I would like to thank the jury for their service in this trial,” said District Attorney Brooke Jenkins. “The jury’s verdict holds Mr. Dunn accountable and clearly demonstrates that San Franciscans recognize that there is no place for threatening people under any circumstances, but especially for doing their jobs. My office takes these cases seriously as threats of violence sometimes become actual violence and it is imperative that we take proactive steps to protect the safety of the public.”

According to testimony and other evidence presented at trial, on May 10, 2023, at approximately 8:10 am, janitorial staff at a residential complex on the 400 block of China Basin Street were moving commercial garbage bins when the victim saw Mr. Dunn in the garbage room holding a large metal pipe. After the victim informed Mr. Dunn that the room was restricted to employees, Mr. Dunn dropped the pipe, picked up a larger 10 -foot pipe and threatened to kill the victim while swinging the pipe. The victim, having had previous hostile encounters with Mr. Dunn, retreated behind a garbage bin in fear for his life. San Francisco Police officers arrived minutes later, reviewed surveillance footage and arrested Mr. Dunn.

The case against Mr. Dunn was successfully prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Samantha Persaud, with assistance from paralegal Sara Wong, IT support Noaeh Pinaire, and law clerk Matt Wallace. Prosecutors were able to develop a strong case against Mr. Dunn based on the San Francisco Police Department’s investigation and witness testimony.

“Our words have consequences, and no one deserves to be threatened with death or harm for simply doing their job,” said Assistant District Attorney Samantha Persaud. “I appreciate the jury’s thoughtful approach in deliberations and their commitment to following the law and holding Mr. Dunn accountable for his actions.
Mr. Dunn is currently in custody. Sentencing is scheduled for July 18, 2024.
