EL CERRITO MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO FIRST-DEGREE MURDER IN 2019 KILLING OF ROMANTIC RIVAL

San Francisco, CA –Today, San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced that Hakim Oden (25), of El Cerrito, was sentenced to 50-years-to-life after pleading guilty to first-degree murder (25-to life) and admitting the firearm enhancement (25-to-life) for the 2019 murder of a co-worker at San Francisco Conservation Corps (SFCC). In addition, Mr. Oden was sentenced to three years in state prison to run concurrently with his 50-to-life prison sentence after pleading guilty to a 2016 robbery that was pending when he committed the murder.

“While nothing we do can bring the victim back, I hope that this outcome brings a measure of closure and healing to his friends and family,” said District Attorney Brooke Jenkins. “My office will always do everything we can to ensure that justice is done, perpetrators are held accountable and that victims of crime have a strong advocate in the courtroom. We will not go back to the days where victims of crime and their families were ignored and sidelined.”

According to court records, March 25, 2019, was the victim’s first day of work at SFCC, his 19th birthday and the day of the murder. On the day of his demise, the victim met Mr. Oden, who had been sent to SFCC after committing a 2016 robbery on a victim who had left work at 450 Golden Gate Avenue. On the day of the murder, Mr. Oden appeared motivated by jealousy as he waited in his car outside the SFCC site on the 200 block of 13th Street until he saw the murder victim with a woman the defendant was romantically interested in. Mr. Oden then followed the group and the victim into the building with his hood up and his hand in his hoodie pocket. He then walked up behind the victim and shot him in the back of the head, execution style. He then fled to his vehicle with his firearm in his hand, sped out of the parking lot, and fled San Francisco. Mr. Oden was eventually apprehended in Riverside County after a shootout with California Highway Patrol officers.

The case against Mr. Oden was successfully prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Charly Weissenbach, with support from paralegals Jessica Diamond and Julio Flores Guzman. Victim Witness Advocate Maria Reynoso, who worked diligently to keep the victim’s large family informed and involved throughout the pendency of this case.

“No mother, sister, aunt, cousin, family member or friend deserves to learn that their loved one was murdered on their 19th birthday, especially in a cowardly execution from behind while simply waiting for an elevator,” said Assistant District Attorney Charly Weissenbach. “I can only hope this resolution is able to bring some closure and healing to the family that misses him daily.”

Mr. Oden has been in custody since his transfer from Riverside County custody and subsequent arrest by San Francisco Police on January 13, 2023.
