MAN CHARGED WITH MULTIPLE FELONIES IN CONNECTION TO THREATS AT TWO SCHOOLS

San Francisco, CA – Today, San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced that Anatoly Smolkin (41) has been charged in connection to a series of criminal threats at local elementary and middle schools. Mr. Smolkin is scheduled to be arraigned on May 15, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. at the Hall of Justice. The District Attorney’s Office will move to have Mr. Smolkin detained pending trial without bail because of the public safety risk he poses. The District Attorney’s Office is also moving to revoke Mr. Smolkin’s felony probation.

Mr. Smolkin is charged with two counts of making threats of violence at a sensitive location (PC 422.3(a)), two counts of making criminal threats (PC 422(A)) and two counts of resisting an executive officer (PC 69(a)), all felonies. The criminal complaint also alleges that Mr. Smolkin committed these alleged offenses while on felony probation and that he has been previously convicted of multiple serious felonies that are charged as prior strikes as he has suffered ten prior convictions for making threats.

According to court records, on May 11, 2026, the Head of School noticed a threatening post on one of the school’s social media accounts allegedly posted by Mr. Smolkin. The Head of School believed these threats were credible as the school had previously reported two similar threats allegedly from Mr. Smolkin to authorities. She stated these threats were more credible due to the specific verbiage naming the school and describing shooting people. The threatening message was posted as a response to a message the school posted announcing new programming for students. As a result of these threats the head of school asked for police coverage at the school.

Additionally, court records also document that on May 13, 2026, SFPD responded to a different school and spoke with the Head of School regarding an incident that occurred the previous evening. The previous evening, on May 12, 2026, Mr. Smolkin allegedly came onto the parking lot of the school site and approached an adult and made grave threats to the people in the school building. On the morning of May 13, 2026, Mr. Smolkin allegedly returned to the property just before the start of school and made similar grave threats about the people at the school. As a result of these threats, the school was placed on lock down for several hours with children and teachers inside.

SFPD obtained surveillance video of these interactions and immediately recognized Mr. Smolkin. Mr. Smolkin was located by SFPD at around 3:42 p.m. and during the arrest allegedly communicated that numerous city leaders would be shot if he was not released by the arresting officers.

These alleged incidents occurred while Mr. Smolkin was on felony probation following a conviction for felony resisting an executive officer (PC 69(a)) on March 24, 2026, less than two months prior to these alleged incidents.

Although charges have been filed, this remains an active investigation. Anyone with information regarding this case, is asked to call the San Francisco Police Department Tip Line at 1-415-575-4444 or Text a Tip to TIP411 and begin the text message with SFPD. You may remain anonymous.
