San Francisco, CA – San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced today that her office secured a conviction of Wynd Sethe Kaufmyn (68) after a trial by jury for trespassing, placing a chain and locking the OpenAI headquarters. Ms. Kaufmyn was convicted of interfering with a business (PC 602.1(a)), trespassing with intent to interfere with a business PC 602(k)), unlawful assembly (PC 407) and refusal to disburse at a riot (PC 409).
“I would like to thank the jury for their service in this trial,” said District Attorney Brooke Jenkins. “I would also like to thank the San Francisco Police Department for their work to fairly accommodate the protest and protect public safety. The jury’s verdict sends a resounding message rejecting the notion that protesters can endanger public safety as a means to an end. Ensuring public safety is critical to ensuring all of the other rights that we cherish.”
According to testimony and evidence presented at trial, on February 22, 2025, members of the group STOP AI were protesting outside OpenAI corporate offices on the 1400 block of Third Street. The protesters placed a chain on the front door and locked it with a large Master Lock. The protesters, including Ms. Kaufmyn sat in front of the chained door. The San Francisco Police Department arrived after OpenAI called 911 and asked for the protesters to be removed. The officers informed the protesters that they were on private property and stated that they could continue to protest if they moved a few feet to the public sidewalk. The protesters, including Ms. Kaufmyn refused to move, were cited, and the chains were cut from the door.
The case against Ms. Kaufmyn was successfully prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Michael Foley, with assistance from District Attorney Investigator Teddy Martin, and paralegals Nohemi Torres and Raquel Paz. Prosecutors were able to develop a strong case thanks to the dedication of officers who investigated this case from the San Francisco Police Department.
“I would like to thank the jury for their verdict,” said Assistant District Attorney Michael Foley. “The jury stayed focused on the facts of the case and the governing law – we appreciate their conscientious work in this case.”
Ms. Kaufmyn is currently out of custody. Sentencing is scheduled for June 22, 2026.
