San Francisco, CA – San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced today that Javier Campos (26) pled guilty in connection to a 2023 Mission District shooting where nine people were shot. Mr. Campos pled guilty to one count of assault with a semiautomatic firearm and admitted that he personally and intentionally used a firearm in the commission of this crime (PC 12022.5(a)), that he personally inflicted great bodily injury on the victims (PC 12022.7(a)), and that he committed this crime for the benefit of a criminal street gang (PC 186.22(b)(1)(C)). He was sentenced to a term of 25 years in state prison. As part of the plea agreement, Campos had to admit he was affiliated with the Sureño Criminal Street Gang and that his actions—in committing the drive-by-shooting—were intended to be an attack on the rival Norteño Criminal Street Gang.
“This sentence reflects the gravity of Mr. Campos’ crimes and holds him accountable”, said District Attorney Brooke Jenkins. “When he opened fire into a public area, he showed a complete disregard for the lives of every person on that street. Senseless gun violence will always be a top priority for my office as we seek to keep all communities safe.”
According to the San Francisco Police Department, on June 9, 2023, at approximately 9:07 P.M., San Francisco Police officers from Mission Station responded to the area of 24th and Treat Streets for a report of a shooting. When officers arrived on scene, they located multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Officers summoned medics to the scene to treat and transport the victims to a local area hospital. A total of nine victims were struck by gunfire during the incident.
The case against Mr. Campos was successfully prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Stacie Pettigrew and Robert Perkins, District Attorney Investigators Doug Keely, Sid Bagon and Gino Guerrero, and paralegals Jessica Diamond and Julio Flores Guzman. Victim Advocates Maria Reynoso and Wesley Chu worked closely with the victims through the pendency of this case. Prosecutors were able to develop a strong case against Mr. Campos based upon the San Francisco Police Department’s Community Violence Reduction Team’s comprehensive investigation and assistance.
“Mr. Campos’s plea of guilty will hold him accountable for this terrible act of violence,” said Assistant District Attorney Robert Perkins. “The plea agreement and state prison sentence ensures that residents of this city will be kept safe from indiscriminate gang violence.”
