San Francisco, CA – San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced today that her office secured a conviction of Murad Bahruddin (36) following an incident in 2023 in which he falsely imprisoned, raped, and physically assaulted his former partner at knifepoint.
Mr. Bahruddin was convicted of three felony counts of false imprisonment while armed with a knife (PC 236, 12022(b)(1), and 12022.3(a)), attempted rape while armed with a knife (PC 261(a)(2)/664 and 12022.3(a), rape while armed with a knife (PC 261(a)(2) and 12022.3(a)), two counts of assault with a deadly weapon (PC 245(a)(1)), two counts of misdemeanor assault (PC 240), criminal threats towards the victim and her son (PC 422), felony domestic violence while armed with a knife (PC 273.5(a) and 12022(b)(1)), and misdemeanor child abuse (PC 273a(b)).
“I would like to thank the jury for their thoughtful consideration of the evidence in this trial,” said District Attorney Brooke Jenkins. “The jury’s verdict is a testament to the strength and courage of the survivor in this case as well as her family. My office remains committed to holding those who perpetrate domestic violence and sexual violence accountable.”
According to testimony and other evidence presented at trial, on September 18, 2023, Mr. Bahruddin came to the victim’s residence to accuse her of cheating on him and threatened to kill her and her children. Mr. Bahruddin then grabbed a kitchen knife and pushed the victim into her bathroom at knifepoint, where he attempted to rape her and demanded she orally copulated him.
The next morning, September 19, the victim awoke to Mr. Bahruddin sitting on her sofa with the kitchen knife and her cell phone. She left to take one of her children to school, and when she returned Mr. Bahruddin pushed the victim into her bedroom at knifepoint, pushed her onto the bed and cut her neck superficially. He then threatened to kill the victim and her children and flee to another country, at which point he raped the victim in her bedroom. Afterwards, he forced the victim to pack and carry his luggage to his car, and he left. After leaving, Mr. Bahruddin called and emailed the victim over 300 times. The victim’s son also reported to the police that Mr. Bahruddin had threatened to kill him, and that he heard his mother being sexually assaulted in their bathroom on September 18, 2023. The victim’s son told the police that he slept with a meat cleaver under his pillow that night, for his protection, and that Mr. Bahruddin physically abused him in the past, including kicking him in the stomach.
The case against Mr. Bahruddin was successfully prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Abigail Adams, with invaluable assistance from District Attorney Investigators Jesus Mendoza and Marte Strange, Victim Advocate Abby Cordova, paralegal Andrew Ong, and IT support from Noaeh Pinaire and Ada Yu.
“The scars of domestic violence extend far beyond the physical; they leave lasting emotional wounds that can take years to heal,” said Assistant District Attorney Abigail Adams. “The Survivor and her children endured years of physical and emotional abuse at the hands of Mr. Bahruddin, culminating in the horrific events of September 18-19, 2023. I am grateful to the jury for carefully considering the evidence and reaching verdicts that hold Mr. Bahruddin accountable so that he can no longer wield power and control over the Survivor and her family.”
