Communications and Policy

The Communication and Policy Department of the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office is seeking interns who will work with our small team of communications and policy personnel in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

Interns will not only receive a behind the scenes understanding of the criminal justice system, but will also be exposed to best practices related to media and community relations in a variety of assignments including, but not limited to:

  • Learning how crime and public policy related news stories are generated and developed in the media. 
  • Receiving ample training in the legislative process.
  • Attend court proceedings to provide updates on criminal cases being covered by the press.
  • Conduct legal research.
  • Updating and utilizing social media platforms.
  • Assisting in planning community outreach events.

Program Requirements

  • Prepared to spend a minimum of 16 hours per week in office and maintain a consistent schedule throughout the program
  • Regularly report to supervising directors

Research and Data

San Francisco Sentencing Community Initiatives Research and Data Intern (Summer Only)

Stipend – $5,000

Reports to: Nora Gregory, Acting Director of Data, Research, and Analytics

The San Francisco District Attorney’s Office is seeking Research Data interns to support neighborhood-based data analysis and engagement with community partners.

Position Description:

With generous support from the San Francisco Foundation, the SFDA is seeking college or graduate-level students with data analytics experience to serve as interns with the SFDA Data, Research and Analytics, and Strategic Planning and Community Initiatives teams. Interns will conduct neighborhood-based data analysis to better understand public-safety trends in the City of San Francisco. 

Principal Duties and Deliverables:

  • Use a combination of data sources to help the SFDA understand neighborhood-level crime and well-being trends through a comprehensive lens to support the development of outreach and education materials for newsletters, web content, emails, and guides;
  • Assist with the preparation of reports to SFDA leadership and other key stakeholders;
  • Query databases, extract data, clean data, and merge data in preparation for statistical analysis;
  • Research performance measurements in the criminal justice field and develop or enhance measures for community well-being;
  • Develop strategies to enhance non-criminal justice data collection efficiently and effectively across systems.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Applicant should be an advanced user of Microsoft Excel familiar with at least one programming language such as R, Python, Stata, or SQL, and comfortable manipulating large data sets (100,000+ rows);
  • Prepare well-organized and accurate documents such as reports, memos, and correspondence; synthesize ideas and factual information into clear and logical written statements;
  • Speak clearly and concisely in order to express ideas and communicate work-related information to a variety of individuals and groups; listen, ask appropriate questions, and effectively elicit information;
  • Identify, research, and gather relevant information from a variety of sources; read and interpret complex written materials; analyze and evaluate data, procedures, interrelated processes, and other information; formulate conclusions and/or alternatives and develop effective recommendations;
  • Use work-related computer applications, including e-mail, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and the Internet;
  • Working knowledge of geographic information systems and spatial analysis is desired but not required;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, commission members, officials, and the general public, including a variety of individuals and groups;
  • Able to problem solve and take initiative on tasks;
  • Excellent time and process management skills, with follow-up and attention to detail critical
  • Ability to multi-task and manage priorities;
  • Demonstrates interest, energy, and enthusiasm for criminal justice reform, public safety, and racial justice policy issues, understanding the intersection of these three frameworks;
  • Flexible and able to adapt to a fast-paced environment.

Undergraduate

The San Francisco District Attorney’s Office offers unpaid internship positions for students with an interest in criminal justice who seek exposure to the unique and diverse opportunities the SFDA’s Office offers.  Students may assist prosecutors in a variety of clerical tasks such as organizing and preparing case files for trials, contacting witnesses and managing subpoenas and records surrounding both pre-trial hearings and jury trials (subject to attorney approval and supervision).  Applicants should be reliable and well-organized students who can successfully balance their studies with their work at the office. 

Undergraduate Internship placements available include, but are not limited to, the following Units of the SFDA’s Office:

  • Homicide
  • Sexual Assault
  • Domestic Violence
  • General Felonies
  • Misdemeanors
  • Vulnerable Victims
  • White Collar
  • Juvenile

Program Requirements

  • Prepared to spend a minimum of 16 hours per week (in person) in your assignment and maintain a consistent schedule throughout the program
  • Regularly report to supervising attorney or paralegal

    4. A copy of government issued photo identification.
    5. Writing Sample – No longer than 10 pages in length

Please note that all candidates are required to complete a Criminal Record Check Information Form with the submission of their application packet. These forms are thoroughly reviewed by our Bureau of Investigations, and applicants are encouraged to be candid. Acceptance into the Program is conditional upon the candidate passing a background check. We suggest applying as soon as possible. Outside Employment Disclosure

California Government Code §§1125 through 1127 prohibits local agency officers and employees from engaging in activities that are incompatible, inconsistent, in conflict, or inimical with their agency employment. As a volunteer intern with our office, interns are bound by these sections of the Government Code. Students selected for any of the intern programs are advised that they may not perform any work (paid or unpaid) for any criminal defense attorney during the pendency of their internship with this office. This applies even if the criminal defense work is in a different county. Students who have other outside employment/incompatible activity during the pendency of their internship must disclose this to our office for review prior to accepting the internship.

Should an intern engage in outside employment/incompatible activity after commencing the internship, the intern must immediately advise the Internship Program Manager. If the outside employment/incompatible activity is deemed to fall within the prohibitions of California Government Code §1125 through 1127, the intern will not be able to remain in our program. If an intern has any questions concerning other employment/incompatible activity, they should contact the Program Director.
