JURY CONVICTS MAN OF DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE ON BAY BRIDGE

San Francisco, CA

San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced today that her office secured a conviction of Jonathan Sanders (38), after a trial by jury for driving under the influence on the Bay Bridge eastbound near Treasure Island. Mr. Sanders was convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol and driving with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08 percent or greater.

“Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is extremely dangerous and completely preventable,” said District Attorney Brooke Jenkins. “My office takes these cases seriously and will continue to do everything we can to make our roads safer for everyone.”

According to testimony and other evidence presented at trial, on March 17, 2024, at approximately 2:27 a.m., a 911 caller called to report a vehicle driving erratically on the Bay Bridge near Treasure Island. California Highway Patrol officers located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop after they observed Mr. Sanders, the driver, swerving and straddling lanes. CHP Officers conducted a driving under the influence investigation, and on the preliminary alcohol screening, Mr. Sanders’ blood BAC was 0.167% and 0.174%. A chemical breath test later revealed a BAC of 0.182%, more than twice the legal limit.

The case against Mr. Sanders was successfully prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Olivia Sanchez with assistance from paralegals Nohemi Torres, Lord Fernandez and Raquel Paz Aleman and IT support from Leland Chan and Noaeh Pinaire. Prosecutors were able to develop a strong case against Mr. Sanders based on the California Highway Patrol’s thorough investigation and assistance.

“I would like to thank the jury for their thoughtful consideration of the evidence and for delivering a just verdict,” said Assistant District Attorney Olivia Sanchez. “This conviction sends a clear message that San Francisco is committed to the safety of everyone on the road and holding those who drive under the influence accountable.”
