JURY CONVICTS MAN OF ILLEGAL FIREARM POSSESSION NEAR UNION SQUARE

San Francisco, CA – San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced today that her office secured a conviction of Safwan Hollis (45), after a trial by jury for illegal possession of a loaded firearm as a convicted felon. Mr. Hollis was convicted of Carrying a Loaded Firearm in a Vehicle by a Prohibited Person (PC 25850(a)), Felon in Possession of a Firearm (PC 29800), and Possession of Ammunition by a Prohibited Person (PC 30305(a)).

“Keeping guns out of the hands of those who are forbidden from having them is critical to reducing gun violence,” said District Attorney Brooke Jenkins. “My office is committed to keeping our city safe and will continue to do everything in our power to reduce the number of illegal guns on our streets. Compliance with our gun laws, especially for convicted felons, is not optional.”

According to the testimony and evidence presented at trial, on the afternoon of August 10, 2022, San Francisco Police Officers observed and detained Mr. Hollis as he walked southbound on Grant Avenue near Union Square and entered a blue Toyota Camry. A search of the vehicle revealed an unregistered, fully loaded Glock 19 pistol in the glove compartment. Officers retrieved nearby surveillance footage showing Mr. Hollis driving the vehicle. DNA testing then showed that Mr. Hollis’ DNA was located on the grip, the magazine inside the firearm, and the bullets inside the magazine.

The case against Mr. Hollis was successfully prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Joseph La Herran with assistance from paralegals Andres Ruano-Hernandez and Jen Java. Prosecutors were able to develop a strong case against Mr. Hollis based upon the San Francisco Police Department’s thorough investigation and assistance.

“The proliferation of privately manufactured firearms allow felons like Mr. Hollis easy access to firearms without going through the proper channels,” said Assistant District Attorney Joseph La Herran. “I am grateful to the San Francisco Police Department for getting one more illegal firearm off the street and to the jury for holding Mr. Hollis accountable for his actions.”

Mr. Hollis is currently in custody. Sentencing is set for April 09, 2026.
