San Francisco, CA – Today, San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced that Hans Haken (39) has been charged following a homophobic vandalism, physical assault, and hit and run incident in the Castro.
Mr. Haken is scheduled to be arraigned on June 18, 2026, at 1:30 p.m., in the Hall of Justice. The District Attorney’s Office will move to have Mr. Haken detained without bail pending trial due to the public safety risk he poses.
He is charged with one felony count of assault with a deadly weapon (PC 245(a)(1)), one count of assault with force likely to cause great bodily injury (PC 245(a)(4)), one count of interference with another’s civil liberties (PC 422.6), one count of vandalism (594(b)(2)(A), one count of a hit and run (VC 20002), and one count of reckless driving (VC 23103). The complaint also alleges that each of the felony assault counts were hate crimes (PC 422.75).
According to court documents, on May 16, 2026, at approximately 5:27 PM, Mr. Haken allegedly vandalized a building on the corner of Market Street and Church Street with a spray can, writing homophobic slurs on the facade and painting over the gate camera and intercom. The building was tagged with “F***** = GAS CHAMBERS.” Noticing the vandalism, a building resident told Mr. Haken to stop. Mr. Haken then allegedly yelled at the victim and pushed him several times. When the victim attempted to photograph Mr. Haken’s license plate, Mr. Haken allegedly reversed his Cadillac SUV toward him and onto the curb, forcing the victim to jump back not to be hit. Mr. Haken then exited his vehicle and punched the victim in the jaw before fleeing the scene. Several witnesses reported that Mr. Haken allegedly yelled homophobic slurs while he assaulted the victim. Allegedly, Mr. Haken then fled eastbound at a high rate of speed and rear-ended a parked Toyota Prius with enough force to roll it into a street pole. A minor victim was seated in the vehicle and suffered minor injuries.
