MAN CHARGED WITH VEHICULAR MANSLAUGHTER IN CONNECTION TO FATAL CHINATOWN COLLISION

San Francisco, CA – Today, San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced that Zhuo Ming Lu (76), was charged in connection to a fatal traffic collision in Chinatown. He was arraigned on May 12, 2026, and pleaded not guilty to all charges and denied the allegations.

Mr. Lu is charged with vehicular manslaughter (PC 192(c)(2)) while driving a vehicle in the commission of unlawful acts (driving on the sidewalk (VC 21663) and driving at unsafe speed (VC 22350) without gross negligence.

The court released Mr. Lu on his own recognizance and ordered that he not drive, surrender his driver’s license and passport. The court also ordered the Department of Motor Vehicles to suspend his license if it has not been already. Mr. Lu’s next court date is September 30, 2026, for a pre-trial hearing.

According to San Francisco Police, on March 27, 2026, at approximately 7:43 a.m. San Francisco Police officers responded to the area of Grant Avenue and Jackson Street regarding a vehicle collision. Officers arrived on scene and located two victims suffering from injuries. The victims were transported by paramedics to a local hospital. Despite the lifesaving efforts of first responders and medical staff, one of the victims was declared deceased at the hospital. Another adult victim was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. San Francisco Police’s preliminary investigation determined that the driver was attempting to park his vehicle when the vehicle collided with two pedestrians on the sidewalk and then into a building. The alleged driver, Mr. Lu, remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation.
