Jorge Sarmiento Zuniga was convicted of sexually assaulting an intoxicated woman in her home
San Francisco, CA – Today, San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced that her office secured a conviction of Jorge Sarmiento Zuniga (43) after trial by jury for oral copulation by intoxication (PC 287(i)), rape by intoxication (PC 261(a)(3)), and vandalism (PC 594(b)(2)(A)). Sarmiento Zuniga raped and sexually assaulted an intoxicated intimate partner in her Mission District apartment in the early morning hours of January 26, 2022. A former intimate partner of Sarmiento Zuniga’s also testified in the case about his physical and sexual assaults of her during their relationship.
“The jury’s verdict sends a clear message that intimate partner violence and sexual assault will not be tolerated,” said District Attorney Brooke Jenkins. “With justice done, I hope that the survivor of this horrific attack will be able to heal and move forward. Let this case and this outcome inspire other women or people in abusive relationships to come forward; our Victim Services Division will provide individual support while our prosecutors will seek justice in the courtroom.”
The case against Sarmiento Zuniga was successfully prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Katy Wells and Tanisha Gooch with assistance from paralegal Andrew Ong, IT support from Leland Chan, and Victim Advocate Alma Garcia who worked closely with the victims. DAI Senior Inspector Lissette Souza and investigators from the San Francisco Police Department’s Special Victims Unit worked closely with the prosecutors to develop the case against Sarmiento Zuniga.
“The defendant’s pattern of sexually abusing his intimate partners has come to an end, thanks to the testimony of two strong survivors,” said Assistant District Attorney Katy Wells. “We are proud and privileged to have worked with these two brave women to achieve justice,” added Assistant District Attorney Tanisha Gooch.
Sarmiento Zuniga was arrested on January 26, 2022, by members of the San Francisco Police Department, the morning after the brutal assault. He has been in custody since his arrest and sentencing is scheduled for March 8, 2023. He faces more than 10 years in State Prison.
