San Francisco, CA – San Francisco, CA – District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced today that Hollister resident Santos De La Rosa (21) has been charged in connection to the murder of a shopkeeper in the Richmond District on August 24, 2023. Mr. De La Rosa is charged with murder (PC 187(a)), second-degree robbery (PC 211) and assault with a deadly weapon (PC 245(a)(1)).

“I would like to thank the San Francisco Police Department’s Homicide division for their outstanding work to identify and apprehend, Mr. De La Rosa, said District Attorney Brooke Jenkins. “I would also like to thank the family and friends of the victim for their patience and trust in the system. Previously, I offered my condolences, and now I offer my office’s unwavering commitment to fighting for justice in the courtroom.”

The District Attorney’s Office issued an arrest warrant for Mr. De La Rosa on September 12, 2023, following an investigation by the San Francisco Police Department’s Homicide division. The criminal complaint filed by the District Attorney’s Office alleges that Mr. De La Rosa attacked a shopkeeper, who was trying to prevent him from stealing two cans of beer, with a bat. After the beating, the complaint further alleges, Mr. De La Rosa retrieved one of the beers he had tried to steal previously, throws the bat at a second victim who was present in the store and then runs in to the passenger side of a waiting vehicle that departs westbound on Balboa Street.

Mr. De La Rosa is scheduled to be arraigned on October 6, 2023, in Department 10 of the Hall of Justice. The District Attorney’s Office will file a motion to detain Mr. De La Rosa pending trial because of the public safety risk he poses. If convicted of all charges he faces up to life in State Prison.

Although charges have been filed, this remains an active investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the San Francisco Police Department Tip Line at 1-415-575-4444 or Text a Tip to TIP411 and begin the text message with SFPD. You may remain anonymous.
