San Francisco, CA – San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced today that her office secured a conviction of Lenard Powell (61), after a trial by jury for punching a woman several times in a car. Mr. Powell was convicted of domestic violence (PC 273.5(a)).
“I would like to thank the jury for their service in this trial,” said District Attorney Brooke Jenkins. “Survivors of domestic violence are not alone and have my commitment to prosecute these cases vigorously. This conviction should send a message of hope and encouragement to anyone suffering that there is help and support available.”
According to the testimony and evidence presented at trial, on March 10, 2025, San Francisco Police Department Officers responded to the intersection of Divisadero Street and O’Farrell Street upon reports of a domestic violence incident. The 9-1-1 caller reported that the victim was initially laying in the middle of the street then got up and got into a white minivan parked on the street next to her through the driver’s side door. Mr. Powell then entered the minivan through the rear sliding door and sat directly behind the victim. The 9-1-1 caller then observed Mr. Powell punch the victim three times in the face before he exited the vehicle, opened the driver’s side door, and dragged the victim out of the vehicle.
The case against Mr. Powell was successfully prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Madison Bouchard with assistance from District Attorney Investigator Rosanna Figueroa, paralegals Lena Ku and Lorreta Luu and the subpoena unit. Victim Advocate Jodee Brown worked closely with the victim through the pendency of this case. Prosecutors were able to develop a strong case against Mr. Powell based on the work of SFPD patrol officers from Northern Station who responded to the scene and officers from the Special Victim’s Unit who continued the investigation.
“Domestic violence is an occurrence that often takes place behind closed doors, without any witnesses,” said Assistant District Attorney Madison Boucher. “I have the greatest respect for the good samaritan who took the initiative to report the violence she witnessed. This case is a testament to our community’s willingness to stand up for those who are victims of crimes.”
Mr. Powell is currently out of custody. Sentencing is scheduled for May 22, 2025.
