JURY CONVICTS MAN OF DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE ON INTERSTATE 80 NEAR TREASURE ISLAND

San Francisco, CA – San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced today that her office secured a conviction of George Callen (34), after a trial by jury for driving under the influence on Interstate 80. Mr. Callen was convicted of driving with a blood alcohol content of 0.08 percent or greater (VC 23152(b)).

“I would like to thank the jury for their service in this trial,” said District Attorney Brooke Jenkins. “I am grateful no one was hurt in this incident where the driver was not only driving under the influence, which is extremely dangerous on its own, but the driver was also traveling at a high rate of speed, compounding the risk to himself and others on the road. My office takes these cases seriously and will continue to do everything we can to make our roads safer.”

According to testimony and other evidence presented at trial, on January 1, 2025, at approximately 1:50 a.m., Mr. Callen, was pulled over by California Highway Patrol (CHP) for traveling at a dangerous speed on I-80 Westbound toward San Francisco near the Treasure Island exit. CHP contacted Mr. Callen, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, and noticed objective signs of intoxication. Mr. Callen admitted to consuming alcoholic beverages at a New Years Eve celebration with friends and family in Rodeo, California.

At the scene, CHP Officers conducted a DUI investigation, during which Mr. Callen performed Field Sobriety Tests (FSTs) and administered two Preliminary Alcohol Screening (PAS) tests. The PAS results revealed that Mr. Callen’s BAC was at 0.146% and 0.147%. CHP Officers placed him under arrest and transported him to the San Francisco CHP Area Office where a chemical breath test confirmed the defendant’s high blood alcohol, with results of 0.145% and 0.147%, nearly twice the legal limit.

The case against Mr. Callen was successfully prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Samantha Phelan with assistance from paralegals Josh Nickchen and Raquel Paz Aleman. Prosecutors were able to develop a strong case against Mr. Callen based on the California Highway Patrol Officers thorough investigation and assistance.

“I am grateful that after carefully considering the evidence in this case, the jury delivered a fair and just verdict,” said Assistant District Attorney Samantha Phelan. “This conviction shows that the people of San Francisco will not tolerate the dangers posed by drunk driving in our city.”

Mr. Callen is currently out of custody. Sentencing is scheduled for May 8, 2025.
