MAN CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTED MURDER FOLLOWING BART SLASHING

San Francisco, CA – Today, San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced that Jovany Portades (34), has been charged in connection to a slashing on a BART train on November 2, 2024. Mr. Portades is scheduled to be arraigned on November 12, 2024, in Department 16 of the Hall of Justice at 1:30 PM. He is charged with one count of attempted murder (PC 664/187(a)). The criminal complaint also includes allegations that Mr. Portades personally and intentionally used a deadly weapon in the commission of this crime (PC 12022(b)(1)), that he personally and intentionally inflicted great bodily injury to the victim (PC 12022.7(a)), and that he is ineligible for probation (PC 1203(k)). Prosecutors moved to have Mr. Portades detained pending trial because of the public safety risk he poses.

“Public transit systems must be safe for all passengers,” said District Attorney Brooke Jenkins. “The brutal unprovoked attack of a woman on a BART train in San Francisco was tragic and truly shocking. This incident sent chills across the Bay Area as we live in a deeply interconnected region where what happens in one jurisdiction echoes across city and county lines. My office will do everything in our power to fight for justice in the courtroom for the victim in this case while we continue to make our neighborhoods, public transit and region safer.”

According to court documents, on November 2, 2024, at 8:00 AM Mr. Portades got on an Antioch-bound train at Balboa BART Station. Mr. Portades allegedly attacked a female passenger on that train without provocation as it approached 24th Street/Mission Station. Mr. Portades allegedly attacked the victim from behind with a knife, cutting and slashing at her neck, face and mouth while she tried to fight him off. As the train arrived at the 24th Street/Mission BART Station Mr. Portades allegedly ran off as soon as the doors opened. After the attack, the victim was able to get off the train and get help from BART and San Francisco Police officers on scene. She was later transported to a local hospital with life threatening injuries.

Mr. Portades was arrested on November 3, 2024, by BART Police at the Fruitvale Station after having been spotted by an alert station agent. He was taken into custody without incident.
