MAN CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTED MURDER IN CONNECTION TO FIFTH STREET SHELTER SHOOTING

San Francisco, CA – Today, San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced that Taylor Reed (29), was charged in connection with a shooting at a shelter on Fifth Street. Mr. Reed was arraigned on January 9, 2025, and pleaded not guilty to all charges and denied all allegations. He is charged with one count of attempted murder (PC 664/187(a)), with an allegation that he personally and intentionally discharged a firearm (PC 12022.53(d)), one count of carrying a loaded firearm (PC25850(a)), one count of carrying a concealed firearm (PC 25400(a)(2)).

“I am grateful for SFPD’s swift response to this incident and that thankfully no loss of life occurred,” said District Attorney Brooke Jenkins. “Those who are attempting to access shelter beds at night are some of our most vulnerable and our homeless shelters must be protected and provide a safe environment for all those experiencing homelessness. My office will continue its commitment to this community and ensure that there is accountability in this case.”

According to court records, on January 4, 2025, Mr. Reed allegedly got into an altercation with the victim in line at a shelter on the 500 block of Fifth Street. After Mr. Reed and the victim were separated by shelter staff, Mr. Reed allegedly pulled out a semi-automatic pistol and racked the slide. The victim pushed the shelter staff member up the stairs, out of harm’s way, and was shot at close range, allegedly by Mr. Reed. The victim tried to run up the stairs but slipped and fell to the ground where he was shot again, allegedly by Mr. Reed who left the area. SFPD Officers arrived on scene and the victim was transported to the hospital in critical condition. Mr. Reed returned to the shelter and was subsequently arrested by SFPD without further incident.

Mr. Reed’s next court date is January 23, 2025, for the preliminary hearing in this matter. The District Attorney’s Office moved to have him detained pending trial due to the public safety risk he poses.

Although charges have been filed, this remains an active investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the San Francisco Police Department Tip Line at 1-415-575-4444 or Text a Tip to TIP411 and begin the text message with SFPD. You may remain anonymous.
