MAN CHARGED WITH FOUR FELONIES IN VIOLENT CANDY SHOP ASSAULT IN WEST PORTAL

San Francisco, CA – District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced today that Parmjit Singh Janda (39) of San Francisco has been charged with four felonies in a violent assault at Shaw’s Candy Store in West Portal.  Mr. Janda was arraigned on September 29, 2023, and pled not guilty to three counts of felony assault with force likely to commit great bodily injury (PC 245(a)(4)) and one count of felony elder abuse (PC 368(b)(1)).

“The senseless attack at a beloved neighborhood candy store in West Portal has left the community reeling with several people injured,” said District Attorney Brooke Jenkins.  “I am grateful to the Good Samaritan and others who intervened and were able to subdue the alleged assailant before police arrived.  My office will now do everything in our power to fight for justice for the community in the courtroom.”

Mr. Janda is alleged to have assaulted and injured four people in the area of Shaw’s Candy Shop, a candy store on the 100 block of West Portal Avenue.  He allegedly attacked the first victim, the owner of the shop, when she asked him to move from a bench in front of her business. Immediately after, Mr. Janda attacked an employee of the shop who tried to help the owner while calling 911.  An 80-year-old patron of the shop was also injured in the scuffle. The fourth victim, a Good Samaritan, was injured when he came to the three other victims’ aid. He was able to subdue Mr. Janda along with others in the neighborhood until police arrived.   San Francisco Police took Mr. Janda into custody without further incident on September 27, 2023.

Mr. Janda’s next court date is October 12, 2023, for the preliminary hearing in this matter.  The District Attorney’s Office moved to detain him pending trial because of the public safety risk he poses.  The court set no bail and will rule on the People’s motion to detain at Mr. Janda’s preliminary hearing.  If convicted of all charges, Mr. Janda faces eight years in State Prison.

Although charges have been filed, this remains an active investigation.  Anyone with information is asked to call the San Francisco Police Department Tip Line at 1-415-575-4444 or Text a Tip to TIP411 and begin the text message with SFPD.  You may remain anonymous.
