MAN CHARGED WITH HATE CRIMES IN CONNECTION TO FINANCIAL DISTRICT ASSAULT

San Francisco, CA – Today, San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced that Irvin Lara-Rivera also known as Irvin Rivera-Lara (31), of San Francisco, has been charged in connection with an assault in the Financial District. Mr. Rivera-Lara is charged with assault likely to cause great bodily injury (PC 245(a)(4)) with a special allegation that this was a hate crime (PC 422.75(a)), and battery with serious bodily injury (PC 243(d)) with a special allegation that this was a hate crime (PC 422.75(a)). Mr. Rivera-Lara is scheduled to be arraigned on September 5, 2024, in Department 10 of the Hall of Justice at 1:30 p.m.

“Hate crimes have no place in our community and must be addressed swiftly by the criminal justice system,” said District Attorney Brooke Jenkins. “Attacks like this demean and degrade individuals while also shaking whole communities. I will do everything in my power to ensure there is accountability and justice in this case.”

According to San Francisco Police, on September 1, 2024, at approximately 9:32 p.m., San Francisco Police officers from Central Station responded to the area of California Street and Drumm Street regarding an assault. Officers arrived on scene and met with the adult female victim who stated that she was standing outside a business when an unknown male suspect walking by made a derogatory comment towards her. After a brief verbal interaction, the suspect began to assault the victim repeatedly.

Mr. Rivera-Lara is currently in custody. Prosecutors are seeking pre-trial detention in this case because of the public safety risk he poses.
