MAN CONVICTED OF ANTISEMITIC HATE CRIME IN 2023 RICHMOND DISTRICT SYNAGOGUE SHOOTING

San Francisco, CA – San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced today that her office secured a conviction of Dmitri Mishin (53), after a trial by jury in connection to a 2023 shooting at a synagogue in the Richmond District. Mr. Mishin was convicted of six counts of interference with religious worship (PC 11412) with hate crime allegations found true in each count (PC 422.75(a)). He was also convicted of six counts of brandishing an imitation firearm (PC 417.4).

“I would like to thank the jury for their service in this trial,” said District Attorney Brooke Jenkins. “There is no place for antisemitism in our community. My office is committed to vigorously prosecuting hate crimes and will do everything we can to fight hate in the courtroom. Hate crimes deeply impact victims and whole communities. Antisemitic incidents like this have lasting impacts and must be addressed. Fighting these crimes and getting justice in the courtroom rights these grave wrongs and restores some of the unity, dignity and humanity that is lost when these crimes are committed.”

According to evidence presented at trial, on the evening of February 1, 2023, Mr. Mishin entered the Schneerson Center, a synagogue on the 2600 block of Balboa Street and began speaking Russian to a group, many of which were elderly, attending a religious class. Mr. Mishin then removed a replica firearm from the inside of his jacket and started shooting blank rounds. Witnesses observed Mr. Mishin shoot the gun seven to eight times before speaking a few final words including words to the effect of “say hello to the Mossad” and leaving the synagogue.

During the course of this investigation police searched Mr. Mishin’s residence and located a jacket carrying the firearm that Mr. Mishin used in the shooting loaded with non-projectile firing rounds (blanks). Investigators located video dated January 14, 2023, taken by Mr. Mishin showing himself burning an object in front of the same synagogue. Police additionally located social media accounts for Mr. Mishin that included a photo of Mr. Mishin holding what appeared to be a grenade and wearing a military-style uniform with a bird symbol and swastika on bottom. This photo was posted to social media on February 2, 2023, just one day after the incident in this case.

The case against Mr. Mishin was successfully prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Abigail Adams, with assistance from District Attorney Investigator Scott Wong, paralegal Yessenia Oropeza and IT support from Noeaeh Pinaire. Victim Advocate Isaac Baron worked closely with the victims through the pendency of this case. Prosecutors were able to develop a strong case against Mr. Mishin based on the thorough investigation of officers from the San Francisco Police Department’s Richmond Station and Special Investigations Division.

“Everyone should feel safe and secure in their place of worship, but as this case demonstrates, unfortunately that feeling can be taken away in a matter of seconds,” said Assistant District Attorney Abigail Adams. “I commend the victims for overcoming their continued fear and testifying at trial and I am grateful to the jury for their very careful consideration of the facts and law.”

Mr. Mishin is currently in custody. Sentencing is scheduled for August 29, 2025.
