SAN FRANCISCO MAN CONVICTED OF MAKING CRIMINAL THREATS

Anatoly Smolkin convicted for threatening to blow up a synagogue in the Inner Richmond.

San Francisco, CA – Today, San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced that her office secured a conviction of Anatoly Smolkin (39) after trial by jury for threatening a synagogue in the Inner Richmond. He was convicted of making criminal threats (PC 422).

“The jury’s verdict in this case sends a strong message that making criminal threats of any sort are unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” said District Attorney Brooke Jenkins. “Criminal threats to blow up houses of worship that have been historically targeted must be taken seriously and aggressively prosecuted. Violent threats often come before violence, and it is imperative that we take steps to proactively protect the public.”

On April 7, 2022, at about 12:05 PM, Mr. Smolkin walked to the front entrance of Temple Emanu-El and threatened to kill everyone there and blow up the synagogue. The security staff on-site recognized the danger and immediately notified authorities. Members of the San Francisco Police Department arrested Mr. Smolkin shortly after without incident.

The case against Mr. Smolkin was successfully prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Samantha Adhikari with assistance from District Attorney Investigators Lieutenant Alex Nocon and Investigator Ted Martin, Paralegal Cynthia Tran and IT support from Noaeh Pinaire. Prosecutors were able to develop a strong case against Mr. Smolkin based on the outstanding investigative work performed by the San Francisco Police Department’s Richmond Station.

“Mr. Smolkin’s conduct directly endangered not just the victim, but also, the congregants of Temple Emanu-El at large, said Assistant District Attorney Samantha Adhikari. “I am grateful to the jury for their swift, yet thoughtful deliberation despite challenging legal issues, and returning a verdict that contributes to ensuring public safety.”

Mr. Smolkin faces up to six years in State Prison. He has been in custody since his arrest by San Francisco Police on April 7, 2022. Sentencing is scheduled for August 28, 2023.
